Action

What are you waiting for?

During our lifetimes, we have been faced with numerous opportunities and divergent courses of action that we may have let go. Do you ever think about what would have happened if you had actually taken action? When you look back, it is likely that you regret not taking action at that point in time. What made you hesitate and then simply look the other way? 99 out of 100 times, it has been FEAR.

a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc., whether the threat is real or imagined; the feeling or condition of being afraid.(X)

One of the many classifications into which people may be divided are those who in the presence of opportunity, challenge, change... have an affinity for action and those who within the same circumstances, will think. They will think about the "what ifs" and likely zero in on the potential risk. 99 out of 100 times, those will regret later their hesitation and inaction. Now, it is too late.

"There are risks and costs to a program of action. But they are far less than the long-range risks and costs of comfortable inaction."

- John F. Kennedy

But how do you get out of that "thinking mindset" and move toward the "doing mindset"? (X)

  • Do not get stuck into doing great big things...Great big things are only accomplished by taking small steps.

What can you do right now to take even the smallest step towards achieving your most important goal on your to-do list?

  • Instead of "free floating" thinking, invest your time into creating a cost-benefit analysis regarding that course of action. Make a plan. Something short and concrete.

  • Celebrate small victories. You do not need to tell anyone. Just keep small victories to yourself. Telling others will create expectations and expectations are not always conducive to action. It is about time to make you your own best friend. Make a pact and be your own coach. Make yourself accountable.

  • Be fearless: Fearless does not mean without FEAR, it means that you understand the risks and you are able to leverage feelings and possible outcomes. You trust your ability to handle failure if this were the outcome. Remember that all life experiences provide you with invaluable skills. You are only defeated if you want to be.

I know well that if you have suffered adverse consequences for taking a particular course of action in the past, you are primed for fear. You are more cautious and hesitant to take a risk and with good reason. You now have conditioned fear and/or anticipatory anxiety. With conditioned fear, you are fearful of something that by itself should not trigger a fear response. Anticipatory anxiety is fear about something that has not even happened. (X) Reframe that "defeat" into a badge of honor. You got through it. Now you are wiser and more ready than ever to embark on to another challenge.

In this day and age, there is nothing that requires and deserves more attention and action than our relationships. Navigating relationships is fraught with risk, yet relationships provide us with unmeasurable positive feelings when they go right. Relationships of all kinds, as someone else is involved, take us into the lack of control realm. It is not all up to you. In the face of discord, it is easy to ruminate about what to do next and at times hope that the dynamics will simply fix themselves. Either that, or your fear is willing to let the other party take action and make a decision for you. You are living by default. Why not take action and address the issue at hand? Why not extend an invitation to hopefully resolve the angst? What do you have to lose? What do you have to gain? Z Form gives you the tools to take action and as Picasso famously stated: "Action is the foundational key to all success."
